Powassen Virus Case Confirmed In Columbia County


(Hudson, NY)  --  The first case of Powassen Virus in Columbia County has been confirmed.

The Columbia County Health Department isn't saying where in the county the infected person lives, just that they are recovering well.  The virus, which is caused by a tick bite, can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu to inflammation of the brain which can be fatal.  Only 29 cases of Powassan virus have been reported in New York State.
