Sheldon Silver Sentenced

(New York, NY) -- Former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has been sentenced to seven years in jail on corruption charges.

In May, Silver was convicted of several felonies connected to schemes where he accepted bribes in exchange for political favors.  Once his prison sentence is over,  New York's former top Democrat will be on parole for at least three years.

Prosecutors were seeking a decade behind bars while Silver's defense team was hoping for community service. In a letter to the judge, Silver says he is deeply sorry and prays he will not die in jail.
