(New York, NY) -- The CDC is confirming a frightening polio-like illness that's striking children all across the country, including three confirmed cases in New Jersey and a suspected case in Upstate New York.
It's called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, and causes sudden paralysis of an arm or leg or facial drooping, often after a child has a cold. The CDC has confirmed 62 cases of this polio-like illness in 22 states, with clusters in Texas and Colorado, but is evaluating 65 more. CDC officials say AFM is rare but the cause is a mystery with no specific treatment.
