Today Is The Shortest Day Of The Year

(New York, NY) -- Today marks the official start of winter.

The winter solstice is today, which means here in the Northern Hemisphere it's the shortest day of the year. The exact moment of the solstice comes at 5:23 pm Eastern, marking the exact time that the Northern Hemisphere has its greatest possible tilt away from the sun.

After today, the days will get increasingly longer until the summer solstice arrives on June 21st. Even though the days will be getting longer, it doesn't mean warmer weather is around the corner. Winter will be here until March and many places across the country often have their coldest temperatures in January.
