(New York, NY) -- Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling on Congress to give Amtrak five-billion-dollars for track repairs following two derailments at Penn Station in less than three weeks.
New York's senior senator says the government has a responsibility to keep Amtrak running smoothly and predicts there'll be more derailments and crashes unless major repairs are made. Amtrak says it has a 28-billion-dollar backlog of repair requests.
An investment plan calling for 180-billion-dollars in improvements to rail and bus systems nationwide has gotten nowhere, so far, in Congress.
