(New York, NY) -- A federal judge is fining U.P.S. nearly a quarter of a billion dollars for illegally shipping hundreds of thousands of cartons of untaxed cigarettes in New York.
According to a court filing on Thursday, the judge in Manhattan federal court ruled that the shipments deprived the state and New York City of millions of dollars in taxes. The shipping company is ordered to pay a total of 247-million dollars in penalties to the city and state. U.P.S. says it will appeal.
