Effort Is Underway To Get Rid Of The MTA Tax

Albany, NY) -- A Hudson Valley lawmaker wants to put an end to the MTA payroll tax imposed on local towns and counties.

Senator Terrence Murphy says having Dutchess, Putnam and the other counties pay for the expenses of New York City is "is like having the colonists in America pay for the King's castle in England." Murphy says that taxing existing jobs has a crippling effect on the economy.

The Republican is pushing a bill to exempt all counties, cities, towns and villages outside of New York City from paying the so-called Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax. It was enacted in 2009 to provide funds for transportation, taxing income earned from wages and self-employment in 12 downstate counties.
