Beloved Police Detective Is Being Honored

(Albany, NY) -- A beloved New York City police detective is being honored.

The interchange of the Belt parkway, Cross Island parkway and exit 22 in Nassau County, is being renamed Detective Steven McDonald Memorial Highway. McDonald was paralyzed after being shot in the line of duty in 1986 and publicly forgave his assailant.

He devoted his life to spreading a message of peace and non-violence. He traveled around the world advocating for wounded officers and the disabled. He made many visits to Dutchess and Ulster counties. McDonald died of a heart attack in January.  He was 59.
