Today Is Arbor Day

(New York, NY) -- It's Arbor Day, and the Arbor Day Foundation is encouraging people to plant trees.

Anyone who becomes a member of the Arbor Day Foundation will get ten free trees to plant in their yard. They can also choose to send the trees to someone else to plant. The foundation will also plant ten trees in a forest in need for everyone who signs up. Ten more trees will be planted in a threatened rain forest. Members will get a Rain Forest Rescue T-shirt.

Trees are important because they provide oxygen and keep the soil in stable condition. Lots of cities are having tree planting events to help the Earth. The Rhinebeck Village Tree Commission will hold their annual Spring Tree Planting Saturday morning.  Volunteers will meet at 9am at the Chancellor Elementary School to plant up to 20 trees.

Arbor Day was first celebrated in the United States in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872.  https://www.arborday.org/.
