New Yorkers Could Identify Their Gender As "X"

(New York, NY) -- Legislation in New York City would give people a third option for identifying their gender. An "X" category would be available for those who don't identify as a male or female.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Corey Johnson have already spoken out in support of the bill.

Already, parents in New York can decide to not put the sex of their child on their birth certificate, the baby’s gender can be listed as unknown. The proposed NYC law would allow adults to have their birth certificate altered to list their gender as X and use that on all official forms.

The legislation is expected to be introduced by Speaker Johnson on Thursday.
