(Utica, NY) -- President Donald Trump says New Yorkers could be paying lower taxes if only they would embrace fracking.
The President was headlining a fundraiser for Representative Claudia Tenney yesterday for her reelection bid in New York's 22nd congressional district. Trump said other states such as Pennsylvania are stealing natural resources out from under New York because it won't allow the process of using water to break apart rock underground to extract natural gas. Many environmentalists oppose the process because they fear it taints local water supplies and may do long-term damage to the planet's crust. Trump argues that allowing fracking and charging oil and gas companies for the natural resources would allow legislators to lower taxes.
Tenney, a Republican, is serving her first term in Congress after winning the seat by five points in 2016. Tenney's opponent is Democrat Anthony Brindisi, a member of the state assembly. Democrats held this seat from 2002 through 2013 so political observers believe it is a pick-up opportunity for Democrats if this is a wave election.
