(New Windsor, NY) -- Hundreds of local residents turned out Saturday at Stewart Airport near Newburgh for the send-off of the 21st Mission of the Hudson Valley Honor Flight. Many waved American flags and applauded as the veterans arrived on Leprechaun buses complete with a motorcycle and police escort.
Thirty World War Two veterans were among the 84 veterans making the trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the war memorials. Korean and Vietnam War veterans and veterans of the Iraq and Kosovo military operations were also on the flight.
ShopRite Supermarkets and their customers have been the top donors to HVHF, providing hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the flights possible. Over more than six years, Hudson Valley Honor Flights have transported 1,700 veterans to Washington, DC free of charge.
