Plastic Bag Ban Begins Today In Ulster County

(Kingston, NY)--Today is the first day that the single-use plastic bag ban goes into effect in Ulster County.

Shoppers at supermarkets and most other stores are being encouraged to bring with them reusable bags to carry their groceries home.Alternately stores will offer to sell paper bags to customers. The law passed by the Ulster County Legislature says “the production and disposal of single-use checkout bags has significant environmental impacts, including the contamination of the environment, the depletion of natural resources, use of non-renewable polluting fossil fuels and increased clean up and disposal costs.”

Though the ban beginning today is for stores in Ulster County, a state-wide ban on single use plastic bags is set to go into effect next March.
