Dutchess County Woman Dies In A Hiking Accident In Ulster County

(High Falls, NY) -- A Dutchess County woman has died in a hiking accident in Ulster County.

According to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office, 71 year old Margaret Fitzgerald from Wappingers Falls died while hiking in the Mohonk Preserve on Saturday when she slipped on an icy slope and fell about 50 feet down a narrow crevice. Sheriff's Detectives say it happened about 12:50 in the afternoon when Fitzgerald was hiking with a group a mile and a half from the Table Rocks trail head. NY State Forest Rangers rappelled down to reach her, however she was pronounced dead at the scene.

In addition to the forest rangers, assistance was provided by the Marbletown Fire Department, High Falls Rescue Squad, Mobile Life Support Services and Mohonk Preserve Staff.
