POUGHKEEPSIE – The 14-year-old boy who sustained a gunshot wound to the head in the City of Poughkeepsie on Friday has died. Akeem Stevens passed away Sunday night.
Circumstances of the youth’s death remain under investigation.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday at 32 Conklin Street.
The cousin of the boy’s mother, Santana Pearson, created a GoFundMe page to raise money to cover funeral expenses. The fundraising effort indicates that the child died on Saturday night. Police officials have told Mid Hudson News that the youth passed away on Sunday night.
“The pain of losing a child is unimaginable and something no parent should have to go through,” she wrote.
Akeem was the oldest of eight children born to his mother, Qadria.
Pearson said Akeem was “a very happy, friendly boy who loved to play basketball and be with his friends and family. He had a great future ahead of him that was taken too soon due to gun violence.”
