Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has announced a $25 million grant program to support volunteer firefighters across the state. The funding will be used to help 88 volunteer fire departments improve their facilities and update their equipment, enhancing their ability to protect New Yorkers and themselves. The grants can be used for a variety of purposes, including renovating firehouses and training centers, installing exhaust and contamination systems, and purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE), washers, dryers, and rehabilitation equipment.

The funding is part of Governor Hochul's ongoing efforts to strengthen New York's volunteer fire services. The program, administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, aims to ensure that fire stations and training facilities within New York State are safe, structurally sound, and meet current building codes and regulations. It also supports effective and safe firefighting practices.

According to the official announcement, the Volunteer Fire Infrastructure & Response Equipment (V-FIRE) Grant Program will also support the consolidation of fire service resources through regionalization efforts to enhance local, county, and statewide response efforts.

Eligible costs under the program include the construction of new or renovation of existing fire stations, classrooms, meeting spaces, or training centers, as well as the installation of exhaust and decontamination systems. The purchase of equipment such as firefighter PPE, PPE washers and dryers, and firefighter rehabilitation equipment is also covered.
