Airports across the Hudson Valley are preparing for one of the busiest travel days of the year. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is advising travelers to arrive at least two hours before their flight's scheduled departure time. Early check-in, either online or through their airline's mobile app, is also recommended to save time at the airport. Travelers are also encouraged to visit the TSA's website to ensure there are no prohibited items in their carry-on bags or checked luggage.
The TSA expects to screen more than 2.8 million people on Tuesday and 2.9 million on Wednesday, after handling more than 2.5 million people on Monday. Despite the large crowds, things appeared to be going relatively smoothly at most airports, according to news10.com.
However, weather conditions and staffing shortages could potentially disrupt travel plans. An Arctic blast in the Midwest and wet weather in the Eastern U.S. could affect travel over the next several days. Additionally, an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers could cause flight delays at some airports.
Despite these potential challenges, the Thanksgiving travel rush is expected to be bigger than ever this year. AAA predicts that nearly 80 million people in the U.S. will venture at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday. Most of them will travel by car. Drivers should expect the worst traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, but travel should be smoother on Thanksgiving Day.
