The spread of the flu virus remains low in the Hudson Valley region, according to new data. Westchester County reported the highest number of cases with 107, followed by Orange County with 17, Rockland County with 12, and Dutchess County with 11. Despite the current low numbers, residents are being urged to get a flu shot in anticipation of a likely surge in cases during the winter months.
Each year in the U.S., more than 200,000 people are hospitalized with flu complications. Those most at risk include pregnant women, adults aged 50 and older, children under the age of five and their caregivers, residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and anyone with certain underlying medical conditions, according to Westchester County Health Department.
Residents can find a list of immunization sites at vaccines.gov. The Westchester County Health Department also offers free vaccines to eligible students. To find out if your child qualifies and to make an appointment, residents can call 914-995-5800.
