The final total for Ulster County's 2025 budget is anticipated to be revealed today (December 13). The budget director, Ken Juras, indicated that the fiscal plan might be closer to $447 million, rather than the nearly $476 million initially announced by the legislature. Lawmakers have adopted 31 amendments to County Executive Jen Metzger's budget, which emphasizes infrastructure, housing, climate initiatives, and emergency medical services without increasing property taxes.
The Ulster County Legislature approved the budget with a 17-4 vote, supporting Metzger's investments while maintaining a healthy fund balance. However, some amendments, such as a proposed 15 percent property tax reduction, were rejected due to concerns about reducing the $210 million surplus needed for unforeseen expenses.
According to Ulster County's official website, Metzger has five days to either sign the budget or veto specific amendments. The budget is set to take effect in January if signed.
