The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced temporary flight restrictions over key infrastructure sites in New York state due to increased drone activity. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the precautionary measure, emphasizing that there is no imminent threat to these sites. The restrictions follow similar measures in New Jersey on Thursday (December 19).
Governor Hochul stated that New York has been closely monitoring drone reports since mid-November and has been in communication with federal partners, including Secretary Mayorkas. The FAA's decision is part of a broader effort to ensure public safety, which remains a top priority for the state. Hochul's statement also highlighted the recent delivery of a state-of-the-art drone detection system by the Biden-Harris Administration.
The new restrictions, effective until January 18, cover areas such as Far Rockaway in Queens, Brooklyn, and parts of Long Island, including Ridge and Garden City. Newsweek reports that over 5,000 drone sightings have been recorded across northeastern states, raising concerns about security threats.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating these sightings, and federal agencies will continue to monitor the situation. Governor Hochul has called on Congress to pass legislation granting states and local law enforcement more authority and resources to manage drone technology.
