The Hudson Valley region is set to welcome two new members of Congress as George Latimer and Josh Riley are sworn in today (January 3). Democrat George Latimer will represent New York's 16th Congressional District, while fellow Democrat Josh Riley will serve the 19th Congressional District.

George Latimer, a former Westchester County Executive, defeated Republican Miriam Flisser to secure his seat. Latimer's victory was anticipated as the district has been a Democratic stronghold, supporting President Biden by 43.7 percentage points in 2020. Latimer's win followed a notable primary battle against Rep. Jamaal Bowman, where he positioned himself as a pro-Israel Democrat. Latimer has previously served in the New York Senate and Assembly and on the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Josh Riley, an attorney from Ithaca, New York, won against incumbent Republican Rep. Marc Molinaro in the 19th District, which includes parts of the Hudson Valley. Riley's victory marks a Democratic gain, as the district had been held by a Republican despite supporting President Biden in 2020. Riley, who has experience as a general counsel on Capitol Hill, focused his campaign on issues like middle-class tax cuts and defending abortion rights.

Incumbent Democrat Pat Ryan and Republican Mike Lawler will also be sworn in for new terms in the 18th and 17th Congressional Districts, respectively.
