Testimony in the Nyqwuan Monroe murder trial is set to wrap up for the week today in Kingston. Monroe is accused of being one of three individuals involved in the shooting death of Dominique Greene in Greene's Kingston apartment nearly two years ago on July 27, 2023. If convicted, Monroe faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
On Thursday (January 16), jurors listened to recordings captured by Greene's cell phone on the day of the shooting. These recordings included some of Greene's last words before he was killed. A pathologist also testified that Greene died from a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Monroe, a convicted felon, allegedly traveled to Kingston with a loaded firearm and, along with his co-defendants, entered Greene's home, where Monroe shot and killed Greene. DNA evidence linked Monroe to the crime, leading to his arrest the following day. As part of a plea deal, the two other suspects, Shaliza Dhanraj and Maliek Fredericks, are testifying against Monroe.
The trial, expected to last approximately two weeks, will feature testimony from around three dozen witnesses, according to Assistant District Attorney Jenna Hastings. Hastings stated, "Nyqwuan Monroe is the individual who shot and killed a young man in his own home. Today’s plea reflects that. However, there is no plea that can ever heal the pain and trauma that his actions caused the family and loved ones of Dominique Green."
The community awaits the outcome and potential sentencing of Monroe as the trial continues.
