The Hudson Valley is experiencing a significant rise in flu cases following the holiday season. Westchester County reported the highest number of cases with 2,412 during the week ending January 11, followed by Orange County with 744 and Dutchess County with 534. Since October, New York State has confirmed over 128,000 flu cases.

The New York State Department of Health has categorized flu activity as geographically widespread for the past four weeks, with more than 31 of New York's 62 counties reporting increased cases. As of Friday, there have been 5,818 hospitalizations due to influenza, with 2,206 occurring in the past week. The state has also reported two influenza-associated pediatric deaths.

Health officials urge residents to get vaccinated against the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to protect against severe illness. Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, emphasized the importance of vaccines, especially for children and older adults. The department has launched a campaign to encourage vaccination across the state.

According to CNY Central, Chief Medical Officer at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, Philip Heavner, noted that nearly half of recent flu tests returned positive results, marking a 20% increase from the previous week. Heavner mentioned, "We don't know what the peak is yet this year, but we're definitely on the way up right now."

With flu cases expected to remain high, health officials recommend staying home when sick, practicing good hygiene, and following preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
