Testimony resumes today (Tuesday, January 21) in the murder trial of Nyqwuan Monroe in Kingston. Monroe, a 26-year-old from New York City, faces charges of murder, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the July 27, 2023, shooting death of Dominique Green. On Friday (January 17), Maliek Fredericks, a former co-defendant, testified that Monroe shot Green, though he admitted he did not see Monroe pull the trigger. Fredericks' murder charge was dropped in exchange for his testimony.
The trial has revealed that Green was struck in the neck by a bullet, severing his jugular vein. A pathologist confirmed that Green died from this single gunshot wound. Recordings from Green's cell phone captured some of his last words on the day of the shooting, providing crucial evidence for the prosecution.
Prosecutors allege that Monroe, along with his co-defendants, entered Green's Kingston apartment with a loaded firearm. DNA evidence linked Monroe to the crime, leading to his arrest the following day. As part of a plea deal, Fredericks and another suspect, Shaliza Dhanraj, are testifying against Monroe.
The trial, expected to last about two weeks, will include testimony from around three dozen witnesses. Assistant District Attorney Jenna Hastings stated, "Nyqwuan Monroe is the individual who shot and killed a young man in his own home." If convicted, Monroe faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
