Kingston will no longer hold its annual Memorial Day parade, a tradition that has lasted over 75 years. Mayor Steve Noble announced the decision, citing declining attendance as the primary reason. Instead of the parade, the city will expand its Memorial Day ceremony, which takes place in Veterans Park in front of Kingston City Hall.
Mayor Noble expressed gratitude to the Kingston Veterans Association for their years of organizing the parade. He acknowledged the difficulty in attracting crowds due to holiday travel and family gatherings, but emphasized that the community's respect for veterans remains strong. "We know the declining attendance is not a reflection on the community’s reverence for our veterans and respect for our fallen heroes," Noble stated.
Veterans Association Chairman Bill Forte explained that the focus will now be on the Memorial Day ceremony, ensuring that the emphasis remains on honoring departed servicemembers. The association will continue to place flags on veterans' graves and conduct ceremonies at local cemeteries and memorial parks.
The city plans to announce further details about the expanded Memorial Day event as the date approaches. The Kingston Veterans Association will also coordinate other events throughout the year, including Veterans Day activities.
