Ulster County officials have issued a warning to residents about scams targeting benefits like SNAP and Medicare. Scammers are attempting to steal personal and financial information by falsely claiming that individuals have lost their benefits. Residents are urged not to share sensitive information such as bank account details or social security numbers.
The alert comes amid a rise in scams across the region. According to New York Attorney General Letitia James, scams often spike during open enrollment periods for health insurance. She advises New Yorkers to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to her office.
In a related warning, Ulster County Clerk Nina Postupack cautioned residents about an ongoing scam involving emails and text messages that appear to be from the NYS DMV. These messages ask recipients to verify their COVID-19 vaccination status and should be deleted immediately.
