Wappinger Fire Victims Identified; Son-in-Law Charged

The victims of a tragic house fire in Wappinger have been identified as 65-year-old Jo Ann Hait and 63-year-old Paul Hait. Their remains were discovered Sunday night (January 26) at their home on Marlorville Road. The fire, which quickly engulfed the house, has been linked to arson.

Authorities have charged 34-year-old Robert Buda, the victims' son-in-law, with arson. He was arrested in Hyde Park and is currently held on a one-million-dollar bond. According to the Mid-Hudson News, Buda traveled from his home in Fort Lauderdale to his in-laws' residence shortly before the fire started.

The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, along with the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division, is leading the investigation. They were joined by local fire department arson investigators to collect evidence and ensure the safe removal of the bodies. The accused, Robert Buda, is married to the victims' daughter, Caroline Buda.
