The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department is preparing for its 15th annual blood drive in honor of Detective John Falcone, who was killed in the line of duty in 2011. This year's event, organized in collaboration with the American Red Cross, will take place at the Grandview on Tuesday (February 25). The blood drive aims to address the current emergency shortage of O negative and B negative blood types, exacerbated by severe winter weather and wildfires.

Detective Falcone was fatally shot on February 18, 2011, while responding to a call near the Poughkeepsie Train Station. He was attempting to disarm Lee Welch, who had just shot his estranged wife and was holding their young daughter. Falcone's bravery and sacrifice have been commemorated annually through this blood drive, which draws both law enforcement personnel and community members.

Chief Thomas Pape of the Poughkeepsie Police Department expressed pride in the event, stating to the Poughkeepsie Journal, "He would be proud of this annual drive and the fact that it serves to help so many in need of blood." Last year's drive collected 50 units of blood, potentially helping up to 150 people.

The Red Cross encourages individuals to schedule appointments in advance by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting redcrossblood.org. This year's drive is expected to be fully booked, continuing the tradition of honoring Detective Falcone's legacy.
