Ulster County is set to accept applications from landowners wishing to join New York State's Agricultural District Program starting March 1. This program aims to assist farmers by providing legal protections and support during site planning and special permit reviews. The initiative encourages the use of land for farming and offers certain tax benefits for viable agricultural land, even if the land is not actively farmed yet.
Last year, the county approved the inclusion of 11 parcels, safeguarding nearly 500 acres of farmland. This year, applications will be accepted until March 30. Interested landowners can submit their applications online or via mail to the Ulster County Planning Department. According to the Ulster County Planning Department, the application process is open to any land that contributes to the viability of the region’s agricultural industry, regardless of its current use.
The New York Agricultural District Program, established in 1971, provides economic and regulatory incentives to encourage farming by offering benefits and protections to farmers. The program is not part of zoning regulations, and being in an agricultural district does not restrict land use or development.
