A Poughkeepsie man, Javan McMillon, has been sentenced to 15 to 21 years in state prison for a violent assault on his girlfriend, Sylvia Furnarotto, in March 2024. The incident took place on Bement Avenue in Poughkeepsie, New York, where McMillon used a leather belt to repeatedly strike Furnarotto, causing significant pain and bruising. The assault occurred in front of her two young children, aged two and four, as reported by CBS6 Albany.

Following two days of testimony and another two days of jury deliberation, McMillon was convicted of assault, aggravated family offense, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that domestic violence has far-reaching impacts, especially when it occurs in front of children. The Daily Voice reported that while in custody, McMillon violated a court-issued order of protection by contacting Furnarotto multiple times.

The sentencing highlights the commitment of the community to hold accountable those who violate court orders meant to protect victims. McMillon’s actions have been condemned as tearing apart families through abuse. News 12 noted that McMillon faced potential imprisonment of up to 20 years for his actions.
