The Town of Saugerties is taking a significant step toward sustainability by replacing aging gas-powered vehicles with electric ones. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has granted the town $100,000 to purchase two battery electric light-duty trucks. These new vehicles aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offer more efficient and cost-effective operations.
The trucks will primarily serve the Department of Parks, Recreation and Buildings, and Waste Water Treatment, operating on public roads and highways. This initiative is part of a broader effort by New York State to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. According to NYSERDA's Truck Voucher Incentive Program, these advanced vehicles are typically less expensive to operate and eliminate tailpipe pollution.
New York State is actively supporting the transition to electric vehicles through various programs, including the Drive Clean Rebate, which offers incentives for purchasing electric cars. Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $60 million investment to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure, further facilitating the shift to clean transportation. This funding aims to increase access to EV charging stations, making it easier for New Yorkers to adopt electric vehicles.
