Construction of the new Greene County Visitors Center in Catskill is progressing swiftly. The center is located at the former site of a Stewart's Shop, across from Exit 21 of the New York State Thruway. This project aims to provide a welcoming space for tourists and house seven staff members from the county's tourism department. If construction continues at its current pace, the center could open as early as June.

The new facility is part of a broader redevelopment plan for the area, which includes a new Stewart's Shop and a proposed 80-room Hampton Inn and Suite. Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden explained that the county's Industrial Development Agency negotiated with Stewart's Shops to acquire the property, facilitating the construction of the visitors center and the hotel. Groden emphasized the economic benefits, stating, "We need a hotel, and having a convention center tagged on to it is big."

The $2.7 million project is funded by the county and the Industrial Development Agency. The center will feature a reception desk, offices, a conference room, and a retail area for local products. A picnic pavilion will also be available for travelers. According to Groden, the center is expected to attract approximately 7,000 visitors annually.

The Greene County Visitors Center is currently operating from a temporary location at 411 Main Street in Catskill while construction is underway. For more information, visitors can contact the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County Tourism Office at 518-943-3223.
