A Dutchess County man, Robert J. Buda, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing a couple and their dog before setting their home on fire. The incident occurred on January 26 at 78 Marlorville Road, just outside the village of Wappingers Falls. Buda, who is reportedly the victims' in-law, has been ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty in Town of Wappinger Court.
The victims, Paul Hait, 63, and Jo Ann Hait, 65, were known for their kindness and community involvement. Paul was a volunteer firefighter and Jo Ann worked in the Arlington School District’s Transportation Department for over 18 years. Their dog, Lady Madonna, was also killed in the incident.
According to the Times Union, Buda is facing multiple charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, aggravated cruelty to animals, and first-degree arson. The Hudson Valley Post reports that Buda allegedly used a 9-millimeter Sig Sauer P354 semi-automatic pistol in the crime.
Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi announced the murder indictment, stating, "This is a heartbreaking moment for all who knew Jo-Ann and Paul Hait, and for our community as a whole." Buda is due back in court next month as the case proceeds.
