New York lawmakers, including Congressman Pat Ryan, are urging the Trump Administration to restore funding for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). They argue that the cuts are threatening vital services across the Hudson Valley. Congressman Ryan highlighted the loss of 20 inpatient beds at Castle Point Veteran Affairs facilities and the potential impact on clean drinking water for residents in Cornwall, New Paltz, and Middletown.
The cuts also jeopardize funding for fire departments from Poughkeepsie to Arlington, which may lose money needed to purchase new trucks and renovate old stations. Congressman Ryan stated, "I refuse to vote for the continuation of chaos, closures, and harm." According to Congressman Ryan, HUD's Office of Community Planning and Development is slated to lose 84% of its staff, which could delay contract renewals and funding distribution.
Senator Schumer joined Ryan in calling for immediate action, stating that the cuts could force families, including veterans, onto the streets. Ryan emphasized that the community must stand together against these cuts, which he described as "un-American."
The situation is dire, with Hudson River Housing warning that without immediate clarity and action from HUD, households will face rent increases, loss of support services, and potential eviction. The lawmakers are demanding that HUD Secretary Scott Turner fulfill Congress's intent by renewing contracts and ensuring adequate staffing to administer crucial programs.
