The Poughkeepsie City School District will soon begin the search for a new superintendent as Eric Rosser announced his resignation effective June 30, 2025. Rosser will take on the role of superintendent for the Rochester City School District, a position he was appointed to following a vote by the Rochester school board, according to Times Union.
Rosser, who has led Poughkeepsie schools since 2019, played a pivotal role in developing a strategic plan that significantly improved academic performance. His tenure saw the implementation of a $99 million capital projects plan that upgraded district infrastructure and improved instructional programming. In an open letter, Rosser expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, "The depth of my gratitude cannot be fully captured in words."
Gregory D. Mott, the current Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, will step in as Acting Interim Superintendent starting July 1, 2025. Mott brings nearly 30 years of experience in education and is expected to ensure continuity and leadership during the transition, as noted by the Poughkeepsie City School District.
Rosser's move to Rochester marks a return to a larger district, as Rochester serves about 20,000 students compared to Poughkeepsie's 4,000. His experience includes roles in Buffalo, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., where he focused on educational reforms and student support. The Mid Hudson News reported that Rosser's leadership in Poughkeepsie helped tackle challenges such as violence and poor attendance, and he was instrumental in creating the Children’s Cabinet with former city mayor Rob Rolison.
