The New York State Police (NYSP) have announced the results of their St. Patrick's Day enforcement initiative, which took place from Friday (March 14) to Monday (March 17). During this period, 239 individuals were arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI), and over 11,582 tickets were issued for various traffic violations across the state. This year's crackdown extended an extra day compared to 2024, when 217 DWI arrests were made and 8,662 tickets were issued.
The campaign, funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, included sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and measures against underage drinking and sales to minors. State Troopers also targeted speeding and aggressive driving, issuing 3,680 tickets for speeding and 337 for distracted driving. According to the New York State Police, there were 563 crashes investigated during the initiative, none of which were fatal.
In the Hudson Valley alone, 79 DWI arrests were made. The Capital Region saw 962 tickets issued, including 31 DWI arrests and 331 speeding tickets. In the North Country, 712 tickets were issued, with 13 DWI arrests. News10 reported that Troop D, covering the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas, issued the most tickets in a single area, with 1,298 tickets.
The NYSP's efforts to enhance road safety during the St. Patrick's Day weekend highlight the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic laws. The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to reduce accidents and promote safety on New York roads.
