Ulster County has introduced a new grant program aimed at supporting local farmers. Announced by County Executive Jen Metzger, the Farm Viability & Sustainability Grant Program offers over $586,000 to assist farmers in maintaining viable and resilient operations. Eligible farmers can apply for grants ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 to fund projects related to market development, energy efficiency, and facility upgrades.
The grant program, funded through the ARPA-supported Agricultural Crisis Relief Program, is administered by the Hudson Valley Agribusiness Development Corporation (HVADC). Applications are open from March 19 through April 30, with a virtual information session scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, to provide additional guidance to interested farmers.
The program focuses on enhancing farm viability and addressing climate resiliency. Funding is available for projects that improve soil health, prevent erosion, and increase energy efficiency. Eligible applicants include for-profit farms classified as "Farm Operations" under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, as well as not-for-profit organizations involved in farming activities. Applicants must have an annual income below $1 million and have filed a Schedule F in 2023.
County Executive Metzger emphasized the importance of supporting local farms, stating, "Our local farms are so important to our economy, communities, and character as a County, and we are committed to keeping farming strong here." Legislator Herb Litts, a co-sponsor of the resolution, highlighted the urgency of addressing the challenges farmers face, from rising costs to climate impacts.
