Man Rescued After Jumping into Hudson River in Poughkeepsie

A man is recovering after an apparent suicide attempt in Poughkeepsie. On Monday (March 24), the man jumped off the docks at Waryas Park into the Hudson River around 4:20 p.m. Emergency teams, including City of Poughkeepsie police, fire, and EMS, quickly responded to the scene. Firefighters launched a Zodiak vessel to search the water, while police used a drone to assist in locating the man.

The man was found partially submerged and unresponsive near Kaal Rock Park. Firefighters retrieved him from the water and brought him onboard the Zodiak vessel. He was then transported to the shore at Kaal Rock, where awaiting emergency personnel performed CPR. The man, who still had a pulse, was taken to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. According to Mid Hudson News, he is now alert and will receive mental health care.

Authorities urge anyone in need of help to contact the HELPLINE at 988 or reach out to Mental Health America of Dutchess County. The City of Poughkeepsie personnel received assistance from Metro-North Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office during the rescue operation.
