Residents of Saugerties are being urged to avoid raccoons following an increase in daytime sightings. The local police department has received numerous reports of raccoons appearing in public areas and behaving unusually, such as wandering in circles, which may indicate rabies or other illnesses like canine distemper, according to a report from the Daily Freeman.
The Saugerties Police Department advises residents not to approach or attempt to touch the animals. Instead, they should contact authorities if they encounter a raccoon. The police department's Crimewatch page suggests that raccoons may be out during the day for reasons other than illness, such as foraging for food after spending the night with their young.
Rabies is a fatal disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, and it can take weeks or months for symptoms to appear. Early treatment is crucial for preventing rabies in humans and pets. The New York State Department of Health has reported cases of rabies in nearby Jefferson County, highlighting the importance of vigilance. Residents are reminded to keep their pets' vaccinations up to date to prevent the spread of rabies, as noted by the U.S. Army Fort Drum.
Pet owners in Saugerties are encouraged to ensure their animals are vaccinated and to monitor them when outside. Anyone bitten by a raccoon should seek medical attention immediately.
