State Senator Michelle Hinchey and other lawmakers are questioning the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) about the safety of the Newburgh-Beacon and Rip Van Winkle Bridges. This comes after the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported potential structural vulnerabilities in these bridges, similar to those that led to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last year.
The NTSB's investigation into the Baltimore incident revealed that Maryland officials did not assess the bridge's vulnerability, which was nearly 30 times above the acceptable limit. This oversight has raised concerns about other bridges nationwide, including those in the Hudson Valley. Lawmakers are seeking answers from DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez about the department's response to the NTSB's findings, timelines for addressing potential vulnerabilities, and the availability of state funding for necessary repairs.
Senator Hinchey emphasized the importance of proactive inspections, stating, "We can’t wait for a disaster to test their safety." Senator James Skoufis added, "Ensuring they remain usable, accessible, and—most of all—safe, is of utmost importance." The lawmakers are urging the DOT to act swiftly to secure these vital transportation links. Senator Rob Rolison echoed these sentiments, highlighting the bridges as "lifelines for communities and commerce."
