The Ulster County Health Department in Kingston is urging residents to exercise caution with backyard poultry as bird flu remains a concern, especially with the Easter holiday approaching. The department emphasizes the importance of being mindful when purchasing baby chicks and ducklings, as these birds can be carriers of avian influenza, also known as bird flu.

In January, a case of bird flu was confirmed at a farm in Ulster County, resulting in the loss of 50 birds. According to the Ulster County Health Department, there are currently no active cases of bird flu in the county, and no human transmission has been reported in New York State. However, the department warns that the risk remains, particularly as migratory birds return to the area, potentially spreading the virus to domestic flocks.

Avian flu is highly contagious and primarily affects wild and domestic birds. The virus can spread through direct contact with infected birds, contaminated surfaces, or even through the air. The Ulster County Health Department advises residents to follow CDC guidelines to protect themselves and their animals. These guidelines can be found at www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/caring/index.html.

While the risk of human transmission is low, exposure to infected animals can lead to symptoms such as red, itchy eyes, fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, and headaches. In birds, signs of illness include sudden death, loss of appetite, swelling or discoloration, and nasal discharge. Residents are advised to avoid handling sick birds and to contact the Ulster County Department of Health at 845-334-5527 if they suspect an animal is infected.

The department also recommends that people working with poultry consider wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when in close proximity to birds. Anyone concerned about potential exposure should contact a communicable disease nurse at 845-340-3070 for more information.
