Congressman Pat Ryan voiced strong opposition to President Donald Trump's recent policies during an appearance at the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Saugerties on Wednesday (April 16). Ryan, a Democrat representing New York's 18th district, criticized the administration's tariff policies and budget cuts, which he claims are harming local businesses and failing to fulfill promises of affordability for Americans.

Ryan highlighted his commitment to reducing housing and prescription drug costs, emphasizing the need for affordability, public safety, and protection of American freedoms. He expressed concern over the current political climate, describing it as chaotic and threatening to democratic principles. "The rule of law and due process are not partisan — they’re American," Ryan stated, urging more voices to speak out against these issues.

The congressman also addressed concerns about the erosion of constitutional protections and the balance of power under the Trump administration. According to Mid Hudson News, Ryan criticized the increase in tariffs, which he described as hidden taxes impacting working- and middle-class Americans. He noted that the national tariff rate had surged from three percent to 24 percent in just over a year.

In addition to economic issues, Ryan discussed public safety, advocating for increased funding for small and mid-sized police departments and supporting the Halt Fentanyl Act to combat drug trafficking. He also addressed the EMS crisis in rural communities, calling for expanded federal support.

Ryan's remarks reflect his broader legislative agenda, which includes a focus on affordability and public safety. He has introduced bipartisan bills to lower grocery and prescription drug costs and boost affordable housing development. The event concluded with constituents expressing gratitude for Ryan's transparency during these challenging times.
