The New York State Public Service Commission is organizing public hearings across the Hudson Valley to discuss proposed utility rate hikes by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation. The hearings will provide an opportunity for residents to express their views on the company's request to increase electric and gas rates.

The first hearing is scheduled for Tuesday (April 29) at 1:00 p.m. at Catskill Town Hall, followed by another at 5:30 p.m. at the Restorative Justice Center in Kingston. A third hearing will take place on Wednesday (April 30) at 1:00 p.m. at Poughkeepsie Town Hall.

Central Hudson has proposed amendments to its electric and gas tariff schedules, seeking to raise its electric delivery revenues by approximately $47 million and gas delivery revenues by about $15 million. This proposal would result in a 5.3% increase in electric bills and a 5.9% increase in gas bills for average residential customers, as reported by the New York State Department of Public Service.

The company attributes the need for these increases to the replacement of aging infrastructure, rising labor costs, and the necessity of cybersecurity measures. Additionally, Central Hudson aims to maintain energy affordability and ensure the continuation of safe and reliable services, aligning with the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, according to the Town of Lexington's website.

Public participation is encouraged, and those interested in speaking at the hearings do not need to make an appointment in advance. Comments will be recorded and included in the official proceedings. For those unable to attend, alternative methods for submitting comments are available.
