The Malden-West Camp Fire District in Saugerties is preparing for a special election on Tuesday, May 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Residents will vote on Proposition One, which proposes issuing bonds up to $750,000 to purchase updated firefighting equipment. The Board of Fire Commissioners has already approved the proposition, aiming to enhance response times and efficiency for the volunteer fire department.

The Saugerties Fire Department, an entirely volunteer organization, has been serving the community for 154 years. It relies on the dedication of its members to protect lives and property in the village and surrounding areas. The department also engages in community activities, such as coordinating the annual Fourth of July parade and hosting fire prevention events.

The proposed funding will help the department maintain its commitment to safety and service. As reported by the Village of Saugerties, the fire department is responsible for various emergency responses, including fires, flooding, and medical assistance.

The special election provides an opportunity for residents to support the department's efforts in acquiring essential equipment. The outcome will determine the department's ability to continue its mission effectively.
