The Hudson Valley and Catskills regions are under a high fire danger alert due to low humidity and strong winds. The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement warning of elevated fire risks, with wind gusts potentially reaching 30 miles per hour. This combination of weather conditions increases the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly.
According to Hudson Valley Country, all of New York State is under a burn ban until May 14, 2025. Officials urge residents to avoid open flames and be cautious with potential ignition sources like cigarettes and machinery.
The National Weather Service predicts sunny weather with temperatures near 61 degrees in Westchester and Rockland, and highs near 51 in Putnam. The wind is expected to be from the northwest at 14 to 17 mph, further contributing to the fire risk.
The Catskills Visitor Center advises hikers to be prepared for changing trail conditions and to follow safety guidelines. The burn ban prohibits residential brush burning in several counties, including Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess, but small campfires and cooking fires are allowed if never left unattended.
Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately to prevent potential devastation.
