The City of Kingston is set to offer community tours tomorrow (May 3) as part of its Midtown Thriving Project. The initiative aims to revitalize underutilized, vacant, or city-owned sites in the Midtown area, aligning them with the community's vision. The tours will start at 10 a.m. at 25 Field Court, near the Midtown Linear Park.
The Midtown Thriving Project is supported by a Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) grant of $238,559 from the New York State Department of State. The project focuses on redeveloping properties within a 270-acre area along the Broadway corridor. The plan, developed in partnership with Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, will take approximately two years to complete. Once finalized, it will be submitted to the state to unlock tax credits and encourage property redevelopment in line with community goals.
Last year, Kingston surveyed residents to gather input on the project. The survey revealed that 92 percent of respondents supported the proposed vision, which includes improvements in housing, community activities, and transportation. Mayor Steven T. Noble emphasized the importance of public input, stating, "We look forward to public input in this plan, which should represent a true community vision for the redevelopment."
The Midtown Thriving Project is expected to create environmentally responsible, mixed-use, and walkable redevelopment in Midtown Kingston. The initiative will also prioritize public engagement throughout the planning process, ensuring that the final plan reflects the community's needs and priorities.
