President Donald Trump has endorsed Congressman Mike Lawler for re-election in New York's 17th Congressional District. Announced on Truth Social Tuesday night (May 6), President Trump praised Lawler as a "strong champion and highly effective representative" for the district, which includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Westchester, and Dutchess counties. Lawler, a Republican, is seeking to maintain the seat for a third consecutive term amid competition from at least four Democratic challengers.
President Trump described Lawler as a "true America First Patriot" committed to securing the border, growing the economy, creating jobs, lowering taxes, and promoting American energy dominance. He also highlighted Lawler's support for the military, veterans, law enforcement, and the Second Amendment, according to CBS6 Albany.
The endorsement comes amid speculation that Lawler may run for New York Governor. However, Lawler has stated he will decide on his political future in June, emphasizing that his decision will not be influenced by others. Meanwhile, the Democratic Governors Association criticized Trump's endorsement, calling it a "presidential snub," and suggested it was an attempt to meddle with New York's GOP primary for Governor.
In addition to Lawler, President Trump also endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for re-election, as reported by the Washington Examiner. Blakeman has already declared his intention to run for re-election in November 2025.
