The Columbia-Greene Humane Society in Hudson has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Companion Animal Capital Fund Grant program. This funding will be used to enhance the shelter's infrastructure and improve the lives of the animals in their care.
The grant will also support the construction of a full-service veterinary hospital. This new facility aims to provide affordable medical care for pets, particularly benefiting low-income families in Columbia and Greene counties. According to Ron Perez, President and CEO of CGHS/SPCA, the hospital will transform the existing Harold Grubin, M.D. Clinic and Health Center into a comprehensive veterinary hospital. It will offer emergency services and rehabilitation for animals affected by cruelty.
The funding comes as part of an initiative to support capital projects that enhance the care of sheltered animals. The Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund provides financial assistance for construction, renovation, and expansion projects necessary for the secure containment and health of sheltered animals.
The project has received support from New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and several state legislators. The new veterinary hospital is expected to serve the community for decades, helping to close the gap in accessible veterinary care for low-income pet owners.
