Plans to build a new skatepark in Kingston are progressing after the Common Council approved the use of over $670,000 in state grant funding. The funding comes from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Environmental Protection Fund. The city will contribute an additional $223,432, covering 23.24% of the project cost.

The skatepark will be located at Hasbrouck Park, with construction expected to begin in 2026. According to project manager Jack Schoonmaker, the city will soon seek proposals for professional services, ensuring public involvement in the design process. Mayor Steven T. Noble expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating it will provide a safe space for youth activities and enhance Kingston's outdoor recreational amenities.

The skatepark project is part of a larger $2.78 million grant package awarded to Kingston for various improvements, including updates to the Binnewater Reservoir Dam and the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan.

The community will have a say in the skatepark's design, and officials are committed to ensuring the park meets residents' needs and expectations. The skatepark will be open during regular park hours, though details about lighting and enclosure are yet to be finalized.
