The Ulster County pool in New Paltz will reopen on June 14 after being closed for most of the past year due to leaking underground pipes. The pool underwent extensive repairs funded by a $3.9 million state grant. The pool will remain open until September 1, after which major upgrades, including a new filtration system, pool deck, and gutter system, will be installed.
For the first time, the pool will offer free access to county seniors and families receiving Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. To qualify for a free season pass, applicants must present their Medicaid or SNAP benefit card and a photo ID verifying county residency. Passes will be issued at the pool upon reopening.
County Executive Jen Metzger expressed excitement about the reopening, stating, "It is a safe, affordable, and fun way to beat the heat of summer, get some exercise, and spend time with friends and family, and I look forward to seeing a lot of happy faces in the pool."
The pool's reopening marks a significant community event, as it was greatly missed last summer. The county also secured a NY SWIMS grant for renovations to the Ellenville/Wawarsing community pool, further enhancing local recreational facilities.
